Try to avoid If you must read Waltz, go for Man, State, and War rather than Theory of International Politics. Graduate and undergraduate students have been required to read the works of Professor Kenneth N. His two most important works – Man, The State, and War and Theory of International Politics – provided the framework within, and against, international-relations scholars have argued for much of the post-WWII period. Kenneth Waltz, the most important Realist theorist of the last half-century, died Monday, a few weeks before his 89th birthday. Ken was the author of several enduring classics of the field, including Man, the State, and War (1959), Foreign Policy and Democratic Politics (1967), and Theory of International Politics (1979).
